This story is the second in the series of four on my Product Hunt secret sauce!
There’s a method to launching well consistently on Product Hunt, but most makers don’t know it.
So, after launching ten times and securing top 5 five times I’m breaking down what I did, what works and what doesn’t.
In the last post, we discussed how to network, iterate a product, generate testimonials, pick a hunter as well as picking a launch day.
This time, we’ll see what it take to actually prepare the launch two weeks in advance. This is the minimum I recommend to give you the best chances.
Here’s the preparation steps that you should not miss.
~ 2 weeks before launch
Preparation for your launch
When preparing for your product launch, there are a few key steps you should take.
Firstly, try to convince a well-known hunter to hunt your product. This step is optional but preferred. The more relevant the hunter is to your domain of product, the better.
Scheduling your launch
I recommend scheduling the launch at least one month before, but two weeks is really the minimum you should do.
I did mine two months before and changed the dates later.
Why?
The coming soon page.
The teaser here allows your product to get followers organically. I had 280+ for my StartOS launch of which ~60 came from the coming soon page!
Keep an eye on the competition
Next, you want to check the competition.
You can check out upcoming launches on Product Hunt to avoid launching on the same day as a product with a lot of followers.
You can check when some products are launching on hunted.space. The caveat is that they must have announced the launch to hunted space- but most don’t!
Launch Marketing and Distribution
It’s also important to create a launch marketing plan.
This plan should include preparing and scheduling an email announcement for your early users, as well as scheduling social media posts to announce your launch.
Scheduling is key because the launch day is going to be extremely stressful. You want to make sure that you’re getting the high probability votes from your community in early.
Don’t forget to prepare an announcement message for relevant communities like groups on Slack, Discord on LinkedIn!
The “Coming Soon” Page
Lastly, make sure to schedule a teaser for your launch. This is a great way to generate buzz and attract potential users. You can learn more about creating a teaser here.
This is an underrated hack, because just appearing at the top of the coming soon page got me 60 followers in the 48 hours before my StartOS launch.
People on Product Hunt love to follow cool products- so don’t miss out!
Tune your landing pages for conversion and traffic
Landing pages are really crucial.
If your launch goes well, as I hope it will, this is what stands between you and revenue. Optimize the landing page for conversion, using strategies like discounts and scarcity (special offers on launch day)
To track the performance of your landing page, consider integrating Google Analytics. The steps for integration may vary depending on your website builder.
2–7 days before launch
Launch Scheduling
As the launch date approaches, there are a few final checks you should perform.
First, ensure that all scheduled times are correct, especially the Product Hunt launch time, which should be set for 12.01 AM PDT. Launching at this time will give you maximum exposure over a 24-hour period.
Tools like Tweet Hunter or Typefully can help you manage your Twitter posts, while Buffer is useful for scheduling LinkedIn updates.
Don’t forget to schedule an email to remind your early users about the launch and encourage them to write a review on Product Hunt. User reviews can be influential in driving sales.
Landing Page, Embeds and Promo Codes
Before the launch, thoroughly check your product for any bugs and address them if necessary. If you are offering any discounts, make sure they are properly implemented.
To prepare your landing page for the influx of traffic, make sure it is functioning correctly and that all buttons and links are working as intended.
If you have embedded the Product Hunt launch on your landing page, confirm that it is properly displayed. Additionally, test your webpage on different devices to ensure it is responsive. I'd also recommend integrating Google Analytics if possible- to see how visitors are interacting with your landing page!
Lastly, double-check any previously scheduled promo codes to ensure they are working properly. If you are offering any discounts, be sure to prominently display them.
Clear your schedule
Dedicate the launch day and the following two days to respond to feedback, answer questions, and boost your launch.
I slept 2.5 hours on launch day for StartOS. REALLY.
Distributing the launch to my connections, and replying to comments and LinkedIn messages since the launch was going well was exhausting!
If you are a team, you can take turns to sleep!
My weekend launches were less stressful because the product launching then have smaller follower counts and smaller teams too!
Closing thoughts
Yes, this is a lot of preparation. And most launchers on Product Hunt don’t do it.
That in itself is an unfair advantage! If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
This preparation is what helped me get a #1 Product on Monday despite being a solo maker.
And believe me, it was worth it!
